What happens if I get a puncture in a hire van?
Do not try and change the wheels on a van with twin rear wheels or on a 7.5 tonne lorry as this can be very dangerous.
Otherwise your van should have a spare tire and it is exactly the same to change a van wheel as a car wheel. If you don’t feel up to doing it just give our breakdown service a call – the number will be in the car.
What happens if I get caught speeding in a hired van?
If you are caught speeding in a hired van, the hire company will provide your details to the police when requested and you will receive the normal penalty for the offence.
What kind of features will the van have?
Your van is likely to have air conditioning, a stereo, electric windows and central locking, though if any of these features are vital to you, check before going ahead with your rental.
What kind of fuel consumption will I get from a van?
Your van is likely to have a turbo diesel engine which is quite fuel efficient despite being powerful. Our What Size Van? page shows the average fuel consumption depending on how big your van is. Don’t forget to fill up your van with diesel and not petrol. Keep stocked up too as diesel vans are difficult to start again if they have no fuel.

Am I able to rent a van for several months?
Yes. Rhino Van Hire has contacts with several companies which can offer long term van rental.
Can I take a rented van abroad?
Some companies don’t allow you to go across the Channel or the Irish Sea but Rhino Van Hire should be able to put you in touch with one that does. These include Sixt and Admiral. There are a number of different rates and regulations depending on what you want and where you want to go. Your UK licence will work fine abroad.
How about kitting the van out with a child or baby seat?
We can provide you with a child or baby seat but you should request it well in advance to be sure of getting one. If we are not able to provide you with one, you will have to do so in advance in order to comply with the law.
What do I do if my rented van breaks down?
We provide full breakdown cover in the unlikely event of an accident. Details of who to call will be located in the vehicle – probably in the glove compartment. If the roadside assistants cannot fix it there and then we will arrange for a replacement van or take you and your possessions to your destination.
What happens if I accidentally put petrol in instead of diesel?
As soon as you figure out you have made an error stop pumping and call your breakdown service. They will pump out the incorrect fuel, give you some diesel and direct you to the next garage, though you are likely to be billed for any repair costs.
Are the police more likely to pull me over in a rental van?
No. But you should examine a rented vehicle thoroughly before you set off in order to check that your tyres and lights are in working order. Also make sure you put on your seat belt before you set off to avoid being stopped. If you are pulled over you will be held responsible for the vehicle, not the rental company.

Can I hire a van with an automatic transmission?
Unfortunately most vans are manual though there are some which are automatic in the UK. We list these on our automatic van hire page and there should be something to suit your needs.
Alternatively you can make some calls to local companies if you only have a licence to drive an automatic and see if they have automatic vans. Other options are to get an MPV or a large estate car instead of a van (see www.rhinocarhire.com) or ask a friend to drive for you!
Do I need a C1 licence to drive a van?
A C1 driving licence permits you to drive heavy goods vehicles which can weigh up to 7.5 tonnes of leaden weight. Therefore if you plan in renting a truck which is 7.5 feet you will not be able to use your normal driving licence but instead you will have to apply for a C1 licence at the DVLA. However, if you took your driving licence before the start of the year 1997 you should have a C1 entitlement on your licence already. Anyone who took their licence after this year needs to apply for a C1.
How old do I need to be to hire a van?
Vans conforming to the above size can be driven from the age of 17 as long as your have a valid licence. You need to bear in mind though that insurance companies will probably not let you drive a van until you are 21, in the case of some smaller companies, and not until you are 25 for the bigger companies.
